Easing Lower Back Pain A Personal Guide


Many people suffer with back pain and most all of those people learn over time what works best to help with their particular pain.  Some of the back pains can be cured where others have to be managed, but there is no doubt that lower back pain can take a toll on a person.  There are many things that one can do to ease chronic back pain.  One of the most common methods that people use would be bed rest combined with anti-inflammatory medications and possibly some pain medication.  There are other options available that may work much better.

Below is a personal guide to help you ease your back pain.  By following some of the simple steps below you’ll be well on your way to moving around pain-free.

Exercise and stretching techniques are a big plus where your back muscles are concerned.  Some people swear by the use of tai chi or even yoga as a big help for back pain.  If you prefer a softer or gentler type of exercise then you may want to go with Vini-yoga.  This is particularly a favored approach for people that suffer with back pain.  It helps you to build your stability as well as your core strength and allows your spine to stretch.  That can help to alleviate a lot of tension and pressure that you have in your spine and can also help to un-pinch nerves which can cause you lower back pain.  It also helps to increase blood flow to parts of the body and helps to promote healing as well as relieving tension on your muscles.

You can still use the tried and true methods of hot and cold packs.  You’ll find that some people prefer to have cold massages done or to use ice packs on the areas they have the back pain.  Ice packs come in many types of forms and can be bought at just about any local store in the pharmacy section.  If you find that you don’t have an ice pack handy, you can use of frozen bag of vegetables.  Vegetables such as corn and peas work rather well and they will help mold to the area.  Be sure to wrap your ice pack with a towel and apply it directly to the painful area.  Do this for at least 5 to 7 minutes at a time.  

Some people prefer to use heat as a method to relieve back pain.  This can be done by using either a heating pad or hot water bottle.  Some companies even make a heating pack that can be used in a microwave or in hot water to heat the pack up.  You can use the heat for your pain in your lower back for at least 15 to 20 minutes at a time and that can help take away pain fairly quickly as it helps to loosen the muscles up.  It can help with muscle spasms as the heat relaxes the muscles and helps them to calm down.

Many people find that a combination of exercise and either the heating pack or an ice pack works rather well to get control over the pain. You may want to follow up with a heating pad or an ice pack after your exercise regimen.  Combine all of the above with an anti-inflammatory and you should be doing well in no time at all.  There are also studies that show nutritional supplements can help in rebuilding cartilage and bone and can also help reduce pain and swelling.  The supplements can also help to reduce muscle spasms.  If you decide that you’re going to use traditional supplements it is best for you to talk with your regular physician so that you can be sure you’re doing what is right for you and your particular condition.

Another very effective method for back pain relief is water therapy.  This is especially good for those that suffer with severe back pain or have had a recent injury, as it allows them to exercise in a way that is less stressful on the body.  The exercises you do in the water are similar to the ones you do out of the water.  The difference is that you use the water to help make the exercises much easier on your body.  When water therapy is used it is generally done with warm water as it helps to loosen the muscles up and to reduce pain.

There are many options for relief for those that suffer with lower back pain.  The key to successful therapy is finding the one that works best for you.  You want to be sure to stay away from aerobic exercises that can cause more injury to the area and it can be a little too demanding on your back. 

Before starting any type of program or supplement be sure to check with your physician first.  He or she can sit down with you and will go over your medical history and decide what options are best for your particular needs.  Be sure that you don’t sit for long periods of time especially if you work at a desk.  Be sure to get up periodically for brief moments to help stretch out your legs in your back.  This can help prevent muscle and chronic back pain.

    I agree with you totally. Exercise for strengthening the back is a critical part of a healthy back. Most back pain injuries are caused by weak muscles in the back which can be avoided. That was a great article. I really enjoyed it and I am going to check back often to see what other information you have for everyone.
